A quick inspection from a chimney sweep can identify any issues within your chimney flue or chimney stack before they become dangerous or overly expensive.
One recent client had a chimney that was in such poor condition, we were unable to sweep it for fear of damaging the chimney further. There was little to no cement pointing holding the chimney together and was in desperate need of rebuilding.
Fortunately, our clients house was in a rather sheltered location, therefore intense winds were unlikely to blow the chimney over. The chimney was rebuilt with the existing bricks, and we returned to the Sarratt address to complete a thorough chimney sweep and draw test to ensure the clients fore was safe to use once again.
While we were there, we noticed a large accumulation of bird nest material at various levels of the chimney and after clearing the debris away, we fitted a bird cowl to prevent future nesting from taking part.
Sarratt is a village four miles north of Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire. The village situated on high ground near the county boundary with Buckinghamshire. The chalk stream that runs through the area, the River Chess, rising north of Chesham, passes near Sarratt in the valley to the west of the village to join the River Colne in Rickmansworth.
Sarratt is within the Three rivers District Council jurisdiction which is based in Rickmansworth. The Three Rivers Authority takes its name from the confluence of the rivers Chess, Colne and the Gade which continues as the River Colne to its confluence with the Thames.
Sarratt has been used as a location in several extremely popular television and film productions including:
In some of his early novels, the former British Intelligence Agent John le Carre, the author of classics like The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Tailor of Panama and The Constant Gardener, made Sarratt the fictional location of an agent training school and interrogation centre for the British foreign intelligence service, often incorrectly referred to as MI6. Le Carre, and the former KGB Colonel, Mikhail Lyubimov, contributed stories to Sarratt and the Draper of Watford, a book published by Village Books in 1999 as a fund raiser for village charities.
In keeping with the acting connection with Sarratt, the celebrated actor Sydney Valentine live in Sarratt. Valentine was born in1865 and died on 23rd December 1919. He was a renowned English actor of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. He was President of the Actors' Association and was remembered for negotiating what became the standard contracts for actors in the West End and on tour.
He was born at Kings Norton, Birmingham, in 1865, when his birth was registered with the spelling "Sidney Valentine Nossiter".
At the time of his death, he lived at Pear Tree Cottage in Sarratt and in Clarence Gate Gardens, Regent's Park, and his estate was valued at £2,948. Later in January the Actors' Association voted to provide a capital sum which would pay Valentine's widow a pension of £3 a week for life, which was described as "the Valentine Standard minimum salary". A memorial was added to the wall of the parish church at Sarratt following his death.
The parish church of Sarratt is the Church of the Holy Cross. Founded in around 1190. Its construction is flint-and-brick built with, what has been argued to be reused Roman tiles from previous buildings left over from the Roman occupation of the Sarratt area.
From the Seventeenth century a large linear village developed nearly one mile away. Nowadays, this area is referred to as Sarratt Green and the area around the church is known as Church End. The village also included a Baptist Chapel and an independent Providence Mission Hall; both sadly closed and were converted into private residences.
When you first start to notice those summer evening beginning to draw in, and that first chill in the air as you rise from bed in the morning, you will realise that winter is just around the corner.
This is the perfect time to call on the services of a chimney sweep to call on you in your Sarratt home. Waiting until you need to put the fire on could be too late. The average chimney sweep does tend to get busy towards the end of autumn, so do not be left out in the cold. Call for a chimney sweep today!
