Berkhamsted was of some importance in Saxon times since there were fifty-two burgesses there at the time of the Norman invasion of 1066, and the town was the terminating point of the invasion. Having defeated Harold II and the English at Hastings, William of Normandy led the Norman invading army to circle London crossing the River Thames at Wallingford making for the Anglo Saxon castle at Berkhamsted.
Having laid waste to much of the south east of England he was met by the English heir to the throne, the Archbishop Aldred, the Earl Edwin and the Earl Morcar, who offered the surrender of the English establishment. In Berkhamsted they swore loyalty to William and offered him the crown of England. Thus in Berkhamsted William the Bastard, the Duke of Normandy became William the Conqueror. However, he refused to accept the crown in Berkhamsted saying he would receive the keys to London in Berkhamsted but would accept the crown in London. His coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066. Following his coronation William granted Berkhamsted to his half-brother, Robert, Count of Mortain, who rebuilt the castle which became a Royal Castle and became the favourite country retreat for the Norman and Plantagenet dynasties.
A chimney liner essentially is a flue lining that is set into a chimney. The liner itself could be made of clay, ceramic, or a metal conduit installed inside the chimney and is intended to contain the combustion products, direct them to the outside atmosphere, and protect the chimney walls from heat and corrosion.
Our prices are based on the property location and number of chimneys that need lining. Please contact us for a no obligation quote. As Berkhamsted is not far from our head office, jobs here will not attract a higher quote.
After Ansell Chimneys have fitted your chimney with a new liner, we carry out a quick, simple but effective test to ensure there is the correct draw and no smoke or other pollutants can flow back into your living space. This is quite simply a match-like device that smokes profusely when burnt and is placed just above the site of the fire. If the smoke is neatly drawn up the chimney, the fire will be safe to use.
So if you live in Berkhamsted and need a new chimney liner, why not call or email Ansell Chimneys and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
